HEAT WAVE / CANICULE

We have a heat wave this week in Melbourne. Today, Wednesday is 36°. Kai Phong did not want to walk this afternoon so we came back home and I'll try again at 6pm. As the sun is really burning, every time I go out, I must apply some sunscreen and wear sun glasses. Kaï Phong is OK with all her hair protecting her skin. Anyway she stays under the air-conditionning.

Nous avons la canicule cette semaine à Melbourne. Aujourd'hui Mercredi, il fait 36°. Kaï Phong n'a pas voulu se promener cette après-midi alors nous sommes rentrées à la maison et j'essayerai à nouveau vers 6h du soir. Comme le soleil est vraiment brûlant,  je dois mettre de la crème solaire à chaque sortie et porter des lunettes de soleil. Pour Kaï Phong ça va, son épaisse fourrure la protège. De toute façon, elle reste près de l'air conditionné.

On Monday evening, we attended a concert Chamber music, with Perla, a friend from Paris who is staying with us for a week. The concert was so-so... but the dinner afterwards was absolutely delicious, so in the whole we spent a great evening. Perla was a speaker at a conference in New Zealand and decided to go to Australia to visit us for a week after her congress. It is a pleasure to host her,  and as she is a very  good cook and loves cooking, we are enjoying delicious meals.

Lundi soir, nous sommes allés au concert avec Perla, une amie de Paris qui est chez nous pour une semaine. Le concert était moyen, mais le diner que nous avons pris après était délicieux, aussi notre soirée fut-elle très réussie malgré tout. Perla a donné une conférence à un congrès en Nouvelle Zélande, et décidé de venir nous voir après son congrès. C'est un plaisir de la recevoir, et comme elle est une excellente cuisinière, qui adore cuisiner, nous nous régalons grâce à elle et à ses bons petits plats.

On Tuesday and today Wednesday, we spend the evening doing Shiva (prayers at the home of a deceased person, during a week) at Varda Ellionson's home. She was a cousin of Mark who sundenly died at 86, a big surprise as she was still in a bvery goo health. She had a small operation on a Melanome (skin cancer very frequent in Australia) on the hand and died unexpectedly 2 days later. It was a big surprise for everybody and a big shock for us as she had be so nice and welcoming to us, inviting us for Rosh Hashana and coming to our home with her husband, children and grand-children...We went to her funeral on Sunday in a huge Jewish cemetary, she had many friends and family attending her funerals as she was loved and respected by all.

Mardi et aujourd'hui Mercredi nous passons la soirée à faire Shiva (prières durant une semaine au domicile d'un défunt) pour la cousine de Mark Varda Ellinson, subitement décédée à 86 ans alors qu'elle se portait parfaitement bien, mais a du se faire enlever un mélanome à la main. (fréquents en Australie). Deux jours après l'opération, elle décéda brusquement à la surprise générale. Nous sommes tous sous le choc, car cette charmante cousine nous avait si bien accueillis à Rosh Hashana et était venue chez nous avec enfants et petits-enfants par la suite. Nous sommes allés à son enterrement Dimanche et il y avait énormément de monde car elle était très aimée et respectée de tous.

THE FOOD VAN / LE CAMION DE NOURRITURE

Last Tuesday, Mark who is the treasurer of  our shul, was advised to go and see the Food Van in action so that he would understand better their financial needs and their way of interacting with people in need of food. I went too.

Mardi dernier, Mark qui est le trésorier de notre synagogue, s'est vu conseiller d'aller voir le camion de nourriture  en action afin de mieux comprendre leurs besoins financiers et leur façon d'inter agir avec les personnes qui ont faim. J'y allai aussi.

Every week, volunteers from our shul prepare food in advance and deepfreeze it, in the shul freezers then on Tuesday someone defrost it and brings it to a wharehouse, while other volunteers collect unsold fresh food or cakes from kosher restaurant or supermarkets or bakeries. Then on Tuesdays afternoon, they bring it all in a wharehouse where it is cooked. Other people buy fruit, paper plates and knifes and forks and small containers.

Toutes les semaines, des volontaires de notre synagogue préparent à l'avance et congèlent de la nourriture dans un grand congélateur de la synagogue et l'apportent dégelé le Mardi dans un entrepôt où elle est cuite ou lavée, tandis que d'autres volontaires vont chercher la nourriture invendue de restaurants cachers ou de supermarchés ou patisseries cacher, d'autres encore achètent des couverts en plastique et assiette en carton ainsi que des boites plastiques avec couvercles.

Then around 6pm everything is put in the van, that already holds foldable tables and chairs and they all go to a place not far from Melbourne harbour in a poor area. As soon as the van arrives, people start gathering and watching while the volunteers set the tables and the buffet. A team will distribute some warm food, drinks and cakes or fruit to whoever is asking for it. Another tam will sit with the guests and chat with them.

Puis vers 6h tout est mis dans le camion, qui contient déjà des tables et chaises pliantes et le tout part pour un endroit près du Port de Melbourne, dans un quartier défavorisé. Dès l'arrivée du bus, les gens se rassemblent et regardent les volontaires dresser les tables et les chaises ainsi que le buffet. Une équipe est chargée de servir la nourriture chaude, les boissons, les gâteaux et les fruits à quiconque vient et en demande.  Une autre équipe s'assied avec les invités et bavarde avec eux.

This whole concept of feeding people in need or just lonely, in a friendly and welcoming way by setting up tables and chairs and buffets loaded with very good food, was created by a priest Father Bob Maguire about 20 years ago. He was there last Tuesday and Mark talk with him and with the guests while I was serving hot meat with carrots and greens. Different team from different religions or charities sets the tables in a different district everyday of the week. Our synagogue has been doing it on Tuesdays for 18 years..

L'ensemble du concept consistant à nourrir les gens qui ont faim ou qui sont seuls, de façon accueillante et amicale, en dressant des tables et des chaises ainsi que des buffets chargés de délicieuse nourriture chaude, ce concept fut conçu par le père Bob Maguire, il y a une vingtaine d'années. Il était présent Mardi dernier et Mark bavarda longuement avec lui et avec des invités tandis que je servais de la viande chaude avec des carottes et légumes verts. Différentes équipes de diverses religions ou oeuvres charitables dressent chaque jour les tables dans un quartier différent.

THOMAS AND RENEE'S WEDDING/ LE MARIAGE DE THOMAS ET RENEE

Last Saturday we attended to our first Chinese wedding at Hong-Kong Park. The ceremony was in the beautiful tea-room, next to the Tea Museum, and there were about a hundred guests. An official (a lady) received their identity in front of their 2 witnesses, and their signature in a big book.

Samedi dernier, nous avons assisté à notre premier mariage Chinois au Parc de Hong-Kong. la cérémonie se tint dans le joli salon de thé, à côté du Musée du Thé, et il y avait environ une centaine d'invités. Une officier de l'Etat Civil reçut leur identité devant leur 2 témoins et leur signature dans un grand livre.

There was no religious ceremony so it was very short. Then Thomas had to do all sorts of games to deserve his bride, and get her for a reasonable price : he had to perform hazardous yoga positions, to answer difficult questions, read a text in Cantonese. He  passed most of the tests, then he kneeled in front of his bride's mother and she kneeled in front of her groom's parents who had come specially from Switzerland.

  

Il n'y avait pas de cérémonie religieuse aussi le mariage fut-il très rapide. Puis Thomas dut passer toutes sortes d'épreuves et de jeux afin de mériter la mariée et de l'acquérir pour un prix modéré: il dut effectuer des positions de yoga difficiles, répondre à des questions compliquées, lire un texte en Cantonais. Il réussit la plupart des épreuves et dut s'agenouiller devant la mère de la mariée, tandis que Renée du s'agenouiller devant les parents de Thomas venus spécialement de Suisse pour l'occasion.

Il y eut ensuite une démonstrations d'arts martiaux chinois traditionnels, par de jeunes enfants.

I met Renée thanks to Jacky who was Chun Wing French teacher. (Jacky was also at the wedding) After I arrived in HK; I called him when I looked for a Cantonese teacher and he declined as he was living really far away in New Territories while Renée was living in Happy Valley 10 mn drive from us. I learnt a bit of Cantonese, as Renée was a very good teacher, but I was not motivated enough to progress.

J'ai rencontré Renée grace à Jacky qui était le prof de Français de Chun Wing. (Kacky était aussi invité au mariage). Une fois arrivée à HK je l'appelai mais il se récusa car il habitait trop loin dans les Nouveaux Territoires tandis que Renée habitait à Happy Valley, à 10 mn en voiture de nous. J'appris un peu de Cantonais, car Renée était un excellent prof, mais je n'étais pas assez motivée pour progresser.

However we became good friends and kept seeing each other with the greatest pleasure even after I stopped the lessons. I was delighted when she invited introduced us to Thomas and later on when she invited Mark and I to their wedding.

Nos restâmes cependant amies et continuâmes à nous voir avec grand plaisir après que j'aie arrêté les leçons. Je fus ravie lorsqu'elle nous présenta à Thomas et quand plus tard, elle nous invita à leur mariage.

In the evening we were invited for dinner at the IFC French restaurant. We spent a lovely evening eating delicious food, drinking great wine, dancing and talking with their friends. Renée kept changing dresses, all more beautiful and sexy than the previous one!!!! The newly wed looked so happy that I felt really pleased for my friend Renée and her lucky husband.

 

Le soir, nous étions invités au diner dans le restaurant français de l'IFC. Nous passâmes une excellente soirée, nous régalâmes d'un délicieux diner, de grands vins, nous dansâmes et bavardâmes avec leurs amis. Renée changeait sans arrêt de robes, toutes plus belles et plus sexy que les précédentes!!! Les jeunes mariés avaient l'air si heureux que je me sentis enchantée pour mon amie Renée et son bienheureux mari.  

BACK FROM HONG-KONG / DE RETOUR DE HONG-KONG

We are just back from 4 days in Hong-Kong where we went to attend a Bat Mitzvah (Confirmation like ceremony) of some friends' daughter Anna Bendavid, and  the wedding of  Renée, my former Cantonese teacher. We had an amazing and busy week-end.

Nous venons de rentrer de Hong-Kong où nous avons assisté à la Bat Mitzva (communion) de la fille d'amis Anna Bendavid, et au mariage de Renée, mon ancien professeur de Cantonnais. Nous avons eu un merveilleux et intense week-end.

We arrived on Thursday morning and after getting changed and cleaned in our hotel, we went to Mark's Taylor to get him some new shirts he had ordered, then he went to the hair dresser while I tried to find new clothes at Marks and Spencer... but I found their new winter collection very disappointing. I went to Wanchai to buy painting material (much cheaper than in Melbourne) I also bought plastic transparent envelops for the Hanouccah greeting cards I drew and have had printed.

Nous arrivâmes le Jeudi matin et après nous être rafraîchis à l'hôtel, nous allâmes chez le tailleur de Mark prendre les chemises qu'il avait commandées, puis il alla chez le coiffeur tandis que je cherchai des vêtements chez Marks and Spencer... hélas leur nouvelle collection d'hiver me parut assez décevante. Je me rendis à Wanchai acheter du matériel de peinture (bien meilleur marché qu'à Melbourne) et des enveloppes transparentes pour les cartes de Hanouccah que j'ai peintes et faites imprimer.

Then in the evening we were invited to a private concert at Hong Kong center for performing arts, by a very young (16 years old) and very talented Israeli young pianist. He played some Brahms and some piano pieces for trio by a young Hong-Konguese composer who was present in the concert hall. They were played by the young Israeli pianist , by a young and excellent Chinese violoniste and by a young fantastic Thai Celliste. 

Puis le soir, nous étions invités à un concert privé au Center for performing art, par un très jeune (16 ans) pianiste Israélien, plein de talent qui joua du Brahms et des morceaux pour trio (joués aussi par un excellent jeune violoniste chinois et un fantastique jeune violoncelliste Thailandais) composés par un jeune chinois présent dans la salle.

On Friday morning we had breakfast with Benjamin Trèves, son of my cousin Daniel Trèves), his wife Yona and 4 month old daughter Laël. We had left Hong-Kong just before Laël was born (In Busan, Korea the native town of her mother). Benjamin looks so proud and so happy, the 3 of them are so nice and cute!!! I think I took photos on my cell phone but never found them....

Vendredi matin, nous avons pris le petit déjeuner avec Benjamin Trèves,(le fils de mon cousin Daniel Trèves) sa femme Yona et leur petite fille de 4 mois Laël. Nous avons quitté Hong-Kong juste avant la naissance de Laël (née à Busan en Corée, ville d'origine de sa maman.) Benjamin a l'air si heureux et si fier, tous les trois sont charmants et adorables!!! Je croyais avoir pris des photos avec mon portable, mais ne les ai pas retrouvées...

Then we had lunch with Jean and Liat. We were also very happy to spend some time with them, it is always a pleasure to catch up, to speak about Hong-Kong, Australia, Chun-Wing and the Jean Wong Ballet school. In the evening Bat Mitzvah at Ohel Leah synagogue and big and charming family dinner at the JCC with the Bendavid and Jablonsky families, from France, Israel, and Australia. We were sited next to Rabbi Oser and his wife Rachel Oser, it is always a great pleasure for us and a great honour, because we like them so much.

Ensuite nous avons déjeuné avec Jean et Liat que nous étions également ravis de retrouver. C'est toujours un plaisir de se raconter ce que nous devenons, de parler de Hong-Kong et de l'Australie, de Chun-Wing et de l'école de danse de Jean Wong. Le soir Bat Mitzvah à la synagogue Ohel Leah et grand diner des familles Bendavid et Jablonsky, venues de Paris , d'Israël et d'Australie. Nous étions assis à côté du Rabbin Oser et de sa femme Rachel ce qui est toujours un grand honneur et un grand plaisir car nous les aimons beaucoup.

On Friday night and on Saturday morning services, we saw a lot of friends whom we miss as we have left Hong-Kong 7 months ago. It was really nice to see them and to catch up with all their news. On Sunday we also saw Chun-Wing's parents always very friendly and charming. What a pleasure to spend some time just the 4 of us.

Aux offices de Vendredi soir et de Samedi matin, nous avons vus de nombreux amis de Hong-Kong qui nous manquent beaucoup. C'était très agréable de les retrouver et de connaître leurs dernières nouvelles et celles de leur famille. Le Dimanche, nous avons aussi vu les parents de Chun Wing toujours aussi amicaux et charmants. Quel plaisir de passer un peu de temps ensemble tous les 4.

On Saturday afternoon and evening, we were invited to Renée and Thomas' Chinese wedding! I'll tell you all about it in the next post.

VERY HOT SUNDAY 12 NOVEMBER/ TRES CHAUD DIMANCHE 12 NOVEMBRE

Yesterday was really hot, above 30° for the first time. In the morning Mark, Kai-Phong and I went to a music festival for dogs and their owners. It was in a park near the Yarra River, and there were hundreds of dogs of all races and sizes with their owners and families. The music was not too loud as dogs have very good and refine earing, everybody sat on rugs under the shade to listen to music and eat vegetarian food provided in various trucks. We ate Indian food, and Kai Phong mostly drank cold water.

Hier il fit vraiment très chaud, plus de 30° pour la première fois. Le matin Mark, Kai-Phong et moi allâmes à un festival de musique pour chiens et leurs maîtres. Ca se passait dans un parc au bord de la rivière Yarra et il y avait des centaines de chiens de toutes races et de toutes tailles avec leur maîtres et leur famille. La musique n'était pas trop forte car les chiens ont une excellente ouie , très sensible., tout le monde s'asseyait sur des couvertures à l'ombre, pour écouter la musique et déguster des plats végétariens vendus dans des camionnettes. Nous déjeunâmes de délicieux plats  indiens  tandis que Kai Phong se contentait d'eau bien fraîche.

 we saw another chow-chow then we came back home where we left Kai Phong and with David we went to see Quentin Meyer who had invited us for tea at his new flat in the CBD near the docks.

 

 

Nous avons vu un autre chow-chow puis nous sommes rentrés à la maison où nous avons laissé Kai Phong et avec David nous sommes partis chez Quentin Meyer qui nous avait invités à prendre le thé dans son nouvel appartement dans le CBD près du port et des docks.

Quentin and Sylvia have a wonderful view on the water and a lovely flat very convenient for their work, as well as for the CBD . There is a direct train from Caulfield where we live so as we don't like to drive it was very convenient. Sylvia and Quentin had prepared tea, delicious sandwiches and Sylvia had baked excellent muffins which we very much devoured and enjoyed! There was a Chinese friend of theirs with her little dog, still a young very charming puppy. We had a lovely time and hope to see them again soon after their trip to New-Zealand where Sylvia's mother is living now.

Quentin et Sylvia ont une vue magnifique sur l'eau et un très joli appartement fort pratique pour leur travail et pour le CBD. Il y a en outre un train direct de Caulfield où nous habitons et comme nous n'aimons pas conduire, nous avons pris le train ce qui était bien pratique. Quentin et Sylvia avaient préparé le thé, de délicieux sandwiches et Sylvia avait fait d'excellents muffins que nous avons dévoré de bon cœur ! Il y avait aussi une amie chinoise à eux avec son bébé micro-chien très mignon. Nous avons passé un très bon moment et espérons les revoir bientôt après leur voyage de Noël en Nouvelle Zélande où habite la maman de Sylvia.
