KEEPING MORNING COFFEE WARM/ GARDER CHAUD LE CAFE DU MATIN

Benjamin and Yona Treves came to dinner one evening and gave us some typically Hong-Konguese presents. My favorite are two lids to put on top of morning coffee bowls or cups. Mark and I use them every day.

Benjamin et Yona Treves, en venant diner un soir, nous ont offert quelques cadeaux typiquement Hong-Kongais. Mes favoris sont deux couvercles pour tasses ou bols de cafe matinal. Mark et  moi les utilisons tous les jours. 

One of the lids is topped by a little red cup of tea, while the other one is topped by a small red tea pot. (Red in China is the color of Happiness) 

L'un des couvercles est recouvert d'une petite tasse de the rouge, tandis que l'autre est surmonte d'une petite theiere du meme rouge. (En Chine le rouge symbolise le Bonheur)

I just love my two  small lids and enjoy using them every morning for breakfast. Thank you Benjamin and Yona!!!!😊😊

THE YEAR OF THE ROOSTER/ L'ANNEE DU COQ

Hong-Kong is now celebrating the Chinese New year and the shops and many restaurant are closed which is very unusual here. I had bought a lot of food and I was ready for 4 days without shopping and 4 days without helper....

Hong-Kong celebre ces jours-ci le Nouvel An Chinois (C'est l'annee du Coq de Feu) et les magasins tout comme beaucoup de restaurants sont fermes ce qui est tres rare ici. J'avais fait des provisions pour 4 jours sans faire de courses et sans helpeuse...

Today Monday was very quiet as Kai Phong had been invited. Mardee came to me saying : "Can we borrow Kai-Phong from Sunday night to Monday late evening, because she is invited on Sunday for a barbecue on the beach?" My dog, the socialite.... 

Aujourd'hui Lundi fut tres calme car Kai Phong a ete invitee. Mardee est venue me trouver en me disant "Pouvons-nous emprunter Kai Phong de Dimanche soir a Lundi tard le soir, parce qu'elle est invitee Dimanche a un barbecue sur la plage?" Mon chien a une vie sociale etonnante.

I told Mardee,"But it's your holiday, for once you have 4 days of rest so enjoy with your family instead of walking Kai Phong." Mardee insisted, "It's good for Rodel (her husband) to walk her, as a driver, he is not moving enough and walking Kai Phong is good for him, plus she is invited by her Labrador friend and all of us (Mardee's family + the labrador's helper and driver (the labrador belongs to a good family of expats)   will have a big party on the beach." So off went Kai Phong, to gorge herself with sausages grilled on the barbecue...

J'ai dit a Mardee, :"Mais pour une fois que vous avez 4 jours d'affile, reposez-vous en famille au lieu de promener mon chien." Elle insista :"C'est bon pour Rodel (son mari) qui est trop sedentaire comme chauffeur, alors, promener Kai Phong, ca le fait bouger. Et puis elle est invitee par son copain le Labrador a un barbecue a la plage, alors nous y allons tous en voiture, nous 4 (Mardee, Rodel, et leurs 2 fillettes) et Kai-Phong et le labrador sa helpeuse et son chauffeur." (Ce labrador appartient a une famille tres aisee d'expats.)

Not having to walk Kai Phong, I spent my afternoon calling my friends in Paris to catch up with their news and let them know our next move to Melbourne : 13 of March!!!!

Comme Kai phong etait invitee et que je n'avais pas a la promener, j'en ai profite pour appeler de nombreux amis a Paris et bavarder une peu pour avoir de leurs nouvelles et leur annoncer notre prochain demenagement : le 13 Mars!!!!

We have two squatters: a tiny and a bigger lezard that are just seen at night. I am happy to have them, and hope they eat lots of mosquitoes. They have been living with us , the big Legard for 4 years and the small one for 1 year, he must be a baby. Small Lezard is really tiny 5cm maximun, while Big Lezard is 4 times bigger.

Nous avons 2 squatters, un petit et un plus grand lezards qui n'apparaissent que la nuit venue. Je suis ravie de les avoir et espere qu'ils mangent beaucoup de moustiques. Ils sont chez nous depuis longtemps, le grand depuis 4 ans, le petit depuis 1 an ce doit etre un bebe. Le petit est vraiment minuscule 5 cms environ et le grand 4 fois plus gros.

This evening (Monday 30th January) Mark had dinner at a delicious Japanese restaurant in Causeway Bay. When we came out of the restaurant, it was raining (normaly January is the driest month in HK) anyway we had raincoats.

Ce soir (Lundi 30 Janvier) Mark et moi sommes alles diner dans un delicieux restaurant Japonais a Causeway Bay. Quand nous sommes sortis du restaurant, il pleuvait (normalement Janvier est le mois le plus sec a HK) de toute facon nous avions nos impermeables.

We took the minibus 14M back home and the driver was my friend. I had not seen him for a month or two. He is the one who klaxons to say Hello every time he sees me and Kai Phong in the street, and some times he comes from behind us and scares me to death with his unexpected klaxon.  

Nous avons pris le minibus 14M pour rentrer a la maison et le conducteur etait mon copain. Je ne l'avais pas vu depuis un mois ou deux. C'est celui qui me klaxonne pour dire bonjour a chaque fois qu'il me voit avec Kai Phong dans la rue, et quelquefois il vient de derriere nous et me fait en klaxonnant, une peur terrible. 

As it rained my glasses were wet when I boarded the minibus and my friend laughted, said Hello and gave me a packet of kleenex to wipe them. All the passengers were very surprised. 

Comme il pleuvait, mes lunettes etaient trempees et quand j'entrai dans le minibus mon copain rigola, me dit bonjour et me tendit un paquet de kleenex pour les essuyer. Les passagers etaient tres surpris.

I told him "M'Goi sai" (Thanks a lot) and " Nei ho ma?" (How are you) He said he was well,  (Ho, ho wa) so I added "Kung Hei Fat Choi" (Happy Chinese New Year) and I did the traditional gesture of a closed fist on top of the other closed fist which is the proper way to wish a Happy New Year, ad he did the same. The passengers were mesmerized...and giggling.

Je lui dis "M'goi sai" (Merci beaucoup) et "Nei Ho ma?" (Comment allez-vous?) Il repondit "Ho ho wa" (tres bien) alors j'ajoutai "Kung Hei Fat Choi" (Bonne Annee Chinoise) et je fis le geste traditionnel d'un poing ferme sur l'autre egalement ferme, pour souhaiter une bonne annee, et il fit de meme. Les passagers etaient fascines... et rigolaient. 

When we arrived to Tai Hang road, I asked my friend the driver to stop for us at the junction which he kindly did waving goodbye. Mark as always was surprised by my tendency to talk to everybody everywhere but he is now used to it after 35 years....

Quand nous arrivames a Tai Hang Road, je demandai au conducteur de nous arreter au croisement ce qu'il fit gentiment en disant aurevoir d'un salut de la main. Mark, comme toujours etait surpris de ma tendance a parler a tout le monde partout mais maintenant apres 35 ans, il s'y est habitue....

CHINESE NEW YEAR / NOUVEL AN CHINOIS

This coming Saturday is Chinese New Year, this year will be the year of the Rooster. Monday and Tuesday are also holidays. Everywhere New Year decorations with red for happiness and gold for Prosperity and plastic plum blossoms for the beginning of spring soon to come after CNY. (as they call Chinese New Year),

                                               

                     

Ce Samedi sera le jour du Nouvel An Chinois, cette annee etant l'annee du Coq. Lundi et Mardi sont egalement feries. Partout des decorations de Nouvel An avec du rouge pour le Bonheur et du dore pour la Prosperite, des fleurs de prunier en plastic pour le debut du printemps tout de suite apres le CNY (Nouvel An Chinois).

                                                        

There will be colorful parades and fantastic fireworks on Victoria Harbor with big crowds of people watching. The shops will be closed (which is exceptional as they remain open during Xmas, Western Mew Year and most festivals.) 

Il y aura des defiles colores et un fantastique feu d'artifice sur le Port Victoria vu par des foules enormes. Les magasins seront fermes(ce qui est exceptionnel car ils restent ouverts meme a Noel et au Nouvel An Occidental ou lors des divers jours feries).

Many people travel or go back home to their native village. In China the planes and trains are all full of traveling people. Here in HK many spend the festival with their extended families and go to visit close friends. CNY is a busy time, buying and giving presents and enveloppes with money, also eating traditional cakes.

Beaucoup de gens voyagent ou rentrent a la maison dans leur village natal. En Chine tous les trains sot pris d;assuat ainsi que les avions. Ici a Hong-Kong beaucoup passent les fetes avec leur familles au sens large et vont rendre visite a leurs amis proches. CNY est une periode chargee, on fait des achats, on achete des cadeaux on donne des enveloppes avec de l'argent, on mange aussi des gateaux traditionnels.

In a magazine, Mark found Donald Trump's handwriting and signature... amazing! Dans une revue, Mark a trouve l'ecriture et la signature de Donald Trump... Incroyable!

Mid January 2017/ Mi Janvier 2017

As we have not traveled for a while I do not have much to tell you. Let me just show you nice HK flowers currently blooming:

Comme nous n'avons pas voyage depuis quelques temps, j'ai peu de choses a raconter. Permettez-moi cependant de vous montrer ci-dessus quelques jolies fleurs qui fleurissent actuellement a Hong-Kong.

Chinese New Year is next Saturday, we will enter the year of the Rooster, everywhere, roosters pictures are shown and sold to decorate Hong-Konguese and Chinese people's home. I have decorated our front door with a rooster too.

                                                                  

C'est le Nouvel An Chinois Samedi prochain, nous entrerons dans l'annee du Coq, et partout, on peut voir des images ou dessins de coqs qui sont montrees ou vendues pour decorer les maisons des Hong Kongais et Chinois. Moi aussi j'ai decore notre porte d'entree avec un coq.

Otherwise, I just finished a painting of the Yellow Mountains in China surrounded by fog.

Sinon, je viens de finir un tableau des Montagnes Jaunes en Chine entourees de brouillard.

 

The text in Hebrew says "Che Kara lo Baolamo" which means "who has such things in His world".

It's a benediction that religious Jews say when they see a beautiful tree or marvel at the sight of nature. 

Le texte en Hebreu dit :"Che Kara ko Baolamo" = "Qui a de telles choses dans Son monde". C;est une benediction que disent les Juifs religieux lorsqu'ils voient un bel arbre ou quand ils s'emerveillent devant le spectacle de la nature.

"Bless You God King of the Universe who has such thing in His World". I was in awe and thankful when I saw the amazing spectacular Yellow Mountains in the mist and fog and when painting them I thought those beautiful Hebrew worlds would express my awe.

"Benis sois Tu Dieu, Roi de l'Univers qui a de telles choses dans Son monde". J'etais eblouie et reconnaissante quand j'ai vu les incroyables et spectaculaires Montagnes Jaunes dans la brume et le brouillard et j'ai pense que ces magnifiques mots en Hebreu exprimeraient  tout a fait mon emerveillement.

I am not much of a believer, but singing and painting my Jewishness are my only way to get close to the Divine.

Je ne suis pas tres religieuse, mais le chant et la peinture de mon Judaisme sont pour moi les seules facons de me rapprocher du Divin. 

Mark has found a job in Melbourne, and the company has processed his visa, but...we still have to wait for a month or two before we get our Australian visa. We plan to look for a flat in February and, all being well, move to Melbourne in March.

Mark a trouve un job a Melbourne, et son entreprise a depose une demande de visa pour lui, mais... nous devons encore attendre un mois ou deux pour recevoir nos visas. Nous envisageons d'aller en Fevrier chercher un appartement et, si tout va bien, de demenager en Mars.

This was David's last week with us in Hong-Kong. He is going back tonight to Melbourne. We will miss him.

C'etait la derniere semaine de David avec nous a Hong-Kong. Il rentre ce soir a Melbourne, et va nous manquer.

On Sunday morning there was a great march on Tai Hang Road for a charity I suppose. Thousand of people walked from Causeway Bay to Mount Butler. The road was closed to traffic and there were many policemen. The atmosphere was so relaxed and friendly that many people asked the policemen to take pictures of their group. The policemen kindly accepted and seemed happy to do so.

                                  

Dimanche matin il y eut une grande marche sur Tai Hang road notre rue, sans doute pour une oeuvre de charite. Des milliers de gens marcherent de Causeway Bay a Mount Butler. La rue etait fermee au voitures et il y avait de nombreux policiers. L'atmosphere etait si detendue et amicale que beauoup de marcheurs demandaient aux policiers de prendre leur groupe en photo. Les policiers acceptaient gentiment et semblaient meme heureux de le faire.

                                                                      

This march was slow and relaxed but in other places of Hong-Kong where other charity also had rallies, people were jogging and as the air was extremely polluted there were many people taken to hospital. We have an issue here in Hong-Kong with pollution and the government seems to refuse to acknowledge it. They pretend that the air is improving..... 

Cete marche etait lente et relaxe mais en d'autres endroits de Hong-Kong ou d'autres oeuvres de charite avaient aussi des marches ou courses, les gens couraient et comme l'air etait extremement pollue, beaucoup de coureurs ou marcheurs finirent a l'hopital. Nous avons un gros probleme de pollution ici a Hong-Kong et le gouvernement semble en plein deni. Il pretend meme que l'air s'ameliore....

On Sunday, Hong-Kong monitoring stations recorded air quality figures as high as 7 to 10. (8 in Causeway Bay near us) 8 to 10 is posing very high health risks. The government should have stopped the circulation and forbidden all the walks and races.

Dimanche, a Hong-Kong les stations verifiant la qualite de l'air ont releve des chiffres eleves de 7 a 10. (8 a Causeway Bay pres de chez nous) 8 a 10 sont consideres comme des chiffres posant de tres hauts risques pour la sante. Le gouvernement aurait du arreter toute circulation et interdit es marches et les courses.

                                             

The South China Morning Post and the Standard wrote articles and showed photos proving how dangerously polluted the city is. When I walk Kai Phong I can see the smog and feel it in my lungs. 

Le South China Morning post et le Standard ont ecrit des articles et montre des photos attestant de la pollution dangereuse qui regnait sur la ville. Quand je promene Kai Phong, je vois bien le brouillard pollue et je le sens dans mes poumons.

Oh I forgot to mention that on Saturday evening, we saw an old French film called Melo by Alain Resnais. A great film which the three of us loved.

J'ai oublie de dire que Samedi soir nous avons vu un vieux film Francais Melo par Alain Resnay. Un grand film que nous avons adore tous les 3.

On Monday we had a late lunch (2pm) with Chun Wing, his parents and sister Yankiu in the Jewish Community Center and we showed them around the community and the synagogue.

Lundi nous avons dejeune tard (2h de l'apres-midi) avec Chun Wing, ses parents et sa soeur Yankiu dans le restaurant du Centre Communautaire Juif et nous le leur avons fait visiter, ainsi que la synagogue.

                                                       

Mark told them the history of Jewish Community in Hong-Kong, how they built and rebuilt the shul. They were very interested.

Mark leur raconta l'histoire de la communaute Juive de Hong-Kong, de comment fut construite puis reconstruite la synagogue. Ils etaient tres interesses. 

Then we showed the Lam family the interior of the synagogue and of the Haaron Ha Kodesh (the sacred arch which countains the Torah scrolls), which is rather spectacular with the beautiful Bagdadhi scrolls.

Puis nous montrames a la famille Lam l'interieur de la synagogue et du Haaron Ha Kodesh ( l'arche sacre qui contient les rouleaux de la Torah), qui est spectaculaire avec ses magnifiques rouleaux Bagdadhis.  

Outside the shul, David played a Chofar tune for us./ Une fois sortis de la shul, David nous joua un air de Chofar.

In the evening, we had dinner in a fantastic Chinese vegetarian restaurant in Garden Road (Mid-Levels) with Renee my Cantonese teacher who has become a friend and her Swiss boyfriend Thomas.

                                                   

Le soir nous dinames dans un delicieux restaurant chinois vegetarien sur Garden Road (Mid-Level) avec Renee, ma prof de Cantonais devenue une amie, et son copain Suisse Thomas.

I love Renee who is so charming, so bright, so full of energy, so open-minded, and who has a wonderful sense of humour.

J'adore  Renee qui est absolument charmante, tres intellignete, pleine d'energie, si ouverte d'esprit et qui a un merveilleux sens de l'humour.

We spent a lovely day among our Hong-Kongese charming friends.

Nous avons passe une merveilleuse journee avec nos charmants amis Hong-Kongais.
