On Wednesday 23rd November 2016 we went to Hanoi and spent the night at beautiful Sofitel Metropole Hotel a traditional colonial building full of quaint charm.
Mercredi 23 Novembre 2016 nous sommes partis pour Hanoi et avons passe la nuit au magnifique Hotel Sofitel Metropole, un batiment colonnial plein de charme desuet.
In every Sofitel in the world, the staff greet you with a "Bonjour Madame, Bonjour Monsieur" or "Bienvenue Madame, Bienvenue Monsieur" perfectly pronounced with an almost perfect French accent, but if you answer in French they don't speak the language at all. This eccentric tradition always makes me laugh.
Dans tous les Sofitel du monde, le personnel vous accueille avec un "Bonjour Madame, Bonjour Monsieur" ou un "Bienvenue Monsieur, bienvenue Madame" prononce avec un parfait accent francais, mais si par malheur vous repondez en Francais, ils ne parlent pas un mot de la langue de Moliere. Cette tradition excentrique me fait toujours rire.
On the way to the hotel we visited Battrang village, a big village exclusively doing pottery. It was interesting to visit but I did not find anything I wanted to buy.

The following day, early in the morning we took a seaplane from Hanoi to Halong Bay. It was my first time in such a small plane (8 passengers + 2 pilots) with propellors. One of the pilots was Australian, he piloted the seaplane during take off, the other one was Vietnamese and did the "landing in the sea"). I was apprehensive, fearing the noise, and the pain in the intern ears, but the engine was quiet, and taking off and landing (in the sea) were perfect.

Tot le matin suivant, nous avons pris un hydre avion de Hanoi vers la Baie de Halong. C'etait pour moi la premiere fois dans un si petit avion (8 passagers et 2 pilotes) avec des helices. L'un des pilotes etait Australien, il fit le decollage, l'autre etait Vietnamien et fit l'amerrissage.) Je redoutais le bruit et la douleur aux oreilles mais le moteur etait peu bruyant et le decollage et l'amerissage se passerent parfaitement en douceur.
From Hanoi during half of the flight we were above clouds and saw nothing down under, but then we lost altitude and could see the stunning Halong Bay with all the Karsts islands, it was so beautiful and spectacular. We flew during 15 magical minutes above Halong Bay then we "landed" in the sea.
Depuis Hanoi, la moitie du trajet se fit au-dessus des nuages et nous ne vimes plus rien du sol, mais ensuite, nous perdimes de l'altitude et pumes voir la spectaculaire Baie de Halong avec tous ses Karsts en ilots, c'etait tellement beau et unique! Nous la survolames pendant quinze minutes magiques, puis nous "amerrimes".
We "landed" in the sea near the shore, and our plane moved in the sea toward a ramp, then arriving on the concrete ramp, its wheels took over and it rolled on them till its parking place. That was amazing!
Nous "amerrimes" pres de la terre, et notre avion avanca dans l'eau vers une rampe, puis une fois au contact de la rampe en beton, il roula dessus avec ses roues jusqu'a la terre et a son parking. C'etait stupefiant!
We then took our private boat to travel in the bay. It was a luxurious boat with one large cabin and en suite bathroom just for us and a crew of 6 men : one would be our guide on shore and translator, one was the captain of the boat, one was the cook, one was the barman,(we did not keep him very busy as we don't drink much alcool) one was the waiter for our meals (he also gave us our first lesson of Tai Chi at 7am before breakfast) and last but not least the mechanic in case of technical problem.
Nous primes notre bateau prive pour nous seuls avec un equipage de 6 personnes : un qui serait notre guide pour les escales et notre traducteur attitre, un autre etait le capitaine du navire, un autre etait le cuisinier, puis le barman (nous ne l'avons pas surmene car nous buvons tres peu d'alcool) puis le serveur pour nos repas (qui fut aussi notre professeur de Tai Chi. Nous primes notre premiere lecon a 7h du matin avant le petit dejeuner) enfin le mecanicien en cas de probleme technique.
We started our cruize by unpacking our small suitcase, then we had an aperitif I had a Mango juice and Mark a local beer, followed by a lovely lunch on board. The cook had been warned of our special culinary habits and had prepared a tasteful Vietnamese cuisine (which we love and enjoy when it is prepared with herbs and spices but not too spicy.)
Nous commencames la croisiere en defaisant notre petite valise, puis nous primes l'aperitif, je choisis un jus de mangue et Mark une biere locale, suivi par un dejeuner delicieux a bord. Le cuisinier avait ete averti de nos habitudes culinaires et avait prepare un repas de subtile cuisine Viernamienne (que nous adorons et apprecions beaucoup surtout quand elle est preparee avec beaucoup d'herbes et d'epices mais sans etre trop forte.)
In the afternoon, we took a flat bamboo boat with our guide to translate and a Vietnamese farmer was rowing and showing us some caves under the Karsts. In winter season, the North Vietnam farmers cannot have a second rice crop because it is too cold and there is not enough water in that season, so they try to find work rowing boats for tourists and they earn more money than with cultivating their land. Then we went back to our boat.
L'apres-midi nous primes un bateau plat avec notre guide et un fermier Vietnamien qui ramait et nous montrait des caves sous les Karsts. Pendant l'hiver, les fermiers du Nord Vietnam sont peu occupes car il fait trop froid et il y a trop peu d'eau pour cultiver une seconde recolte de riz, ils sont donc bien contents de s'occuper des touristes et gagnent plus d'argent qu'avec leurs recoltes. Puis nous retournames au bateau.
Then we just admired the landscape and I took photos. We had tea, and it was all very romantic. The crew proposed to us to fish squids at night with bright lights to attract and catch them, so that the crew can have a delicious breakfast the following morning, but we declined. I can't stand the idea of hunting or fishing even if I eat meat and fish.... (no squids for sure!) We did not need to be entertained, just watching the small islands of different shapes was so beautiful, just watching dusk arrive was enough to keep us happy.
Puis nous admirames inlassablement le paysage et je pris des photos. Nous primes le the, tout ca etait tres romantique. L'equipage nous proposa la nuit venue de pecher le calmar avec des lampes tres fortes pour les attirer et les pecher, ils souhaitaient du calmar pour leur petit dejeuner du lendemain, mais nous declinames. Je supporte mal l'idee de chasser ou de pecher meme si je mange du poisson et de la viande (pas de calmars en tout cas!). Nous n'avions pas besoin d'etre amuses, nous etions contents simplement de contempler les ilots aux formes differentes, c'etait si beau! Il nous suffisait pour etre heureux, de voir le soir tomber doucement.
We had to take an aperitif just to keep the barman busy... so I chosed a cocktail with Cointreau and another alcool mixted with fruit juices and Mark had a Pinacolada. I was completely drunk and giggling after a few sips... and I knocked down my glass while trying to take it. Then dinner was served and I felt less drunk.
Nous dumes prendre l'aperitif, ne serait-ce que pour occuper un peu le barman... et je choisis un cocktail avec du Cointreau et un autre alcool melanges avec des jus de fruits et Mark choisit un Pinacolada. Apres quelques gorgees, j'etais completement saoule... et je renversai mon verre en essayant de le prendre. Puis le diner fut servi et je me sentis moins saoule.
We had a superb dinner, the chef was very good at decorating each plate he certainly was very talented and arty! The weather was to cloudy to admire the sunset, but the night with all the cruise boats parked and beautifully lit up in the dark was a unique show, all the boats seemed to dance the same choreography around their anchors....
Nous eumes un delicieux diner, le chef cuisinier etait attentif a decorer joliment chaque assiette, il avait du talent et un sens esthetique certains! Il y avait trop de nuages pour voir le coucher du soleil, mais la nuit avec tous les bateaux ancres ensemble et illumines dans la penombre etaient feeriques, ils semblaient danser une meme choregraphie autour de leurs ancres ...
We had an early and very peaceful night and woke up early to prepare for Tai Chi!
Nous nous couchames tot et passames une nuit paisible et nous reveillames tot pour nous preparer pour le Tai Chi!
The following morning after our Tai Chi lesson followed by Breakfast, Mark asked the crew to put the red asian sails on, so that we could see them. Apparently it was a strange request but they did it and the boat became a junk, it did not really sailed because the engine was still on but we kept the sails for a few hours, then folded them before reaching the harbor and it was soon the end of this dream like and extravagantly luxurious short cruise. A real dream in a unique natural landscape.
Le lendemain matin apres notre lecon de Tai Chi suivie du petit dejeuner, Mark demanda a l'equipage de sortir les voiles pour que nous puissions les voir deployees. Apparament notre requete les surprit mais ils le firent et le bateau devint une jonque, il ne navigua pas vraiment avec ses voiles car le moteur fonctionnait, mais les voiles resterent au vent pendant quelques heures, puis elles furent affalees avant d'arriver au port, et ce fut bientot la fin de notre merveilleuse et extravagante croisiere de luxe, un vrai reve dans un cadre naturel unique!
We drove during 4 hours to reach Hanoi and visited near the airport a modern Palace :the Viet Phu Thanh Chuong, Vietnam's number one private art collection. The world wide known artist painter Thanh Chuong born in 1949 painstakingly created and gathered a collection of Vietnamese art. He bought thousands of sculpture, potteries, statues some classical other naive, and rebuilt and furnished with old furniture, old style traditional houses of each region of Vietnam. The result is surprising but very charming too.
Nous mimes 4 heures en voiture pour rejoindre Hanoi et visitames pres de l'aeroport un Palais moderne : Le Viet Phu Thanh Chuong, la plus importante collection d'art privee du Vietnam. L'artiste peintre mondialement celebre Thanh Chuong ne en 1949 reunit au prix de gros efforts et crea cette unique collection d'art Vietnamien. Il acheta au fil des ans des milliers de sculptures, de poteries, de statues, classiques ou naives, il reconstitua a l'identique de vieilles maisons traditionnelles des differentes regions du Vietnam. Le resultat est surprenant et tres charmant.

After visiting this strange and charming place, we headed to the airport to go back to Hong Kong.
Apres avoir visite cette etrange et charmant endroit, nous nous dirigeames vers l'aeroport pour retourner a Hong-Kong.
