Mark and I spent our first Rosh Hashana in Melbourne. The first night was on Wednesday 20th septembre and we had guests at home. I had made a special Aussie decoration with apples of course (We, Jews use to eat apples dipped in honey so that the year to come, is sweet to us.) and koalas holding a small Australian flag. David and Myriam were there of course, and we had a couple from shul, Thu a charming young woman, and Harold a gentleman from shul who was alone on that night and happy to be invited. We sang songs for Jewish New Year, which we had found on Internet.
Mark et moi avons passé notre premier Roch Hachana à Melbourne. Le premier soir était le Mercredi 20 Septembre et nous avions des invités à la maison. J'avais fait une décorations spéciale australienne, avec des pommes bien sûr (nous les Juifs, avons pour coutume de tremper une pomme dans du miel pour que l'année qui commence nous soit douce) et des koalas tenant le drapeau autralien. David et Myriam étaient là bien sûr, et nous avions des invités : un couple de la synagogue, Thu une jeune vietnamienne, et Harold un monsieur qui est souvent seul et qui était ravi d'être invité ce soir-là. Nous avons chanté des chansons de circonstance (Nouvel An juif) trouvées sur internet.
The next morning we went to our second shul (we have 2 in Mzlbourne) where David read the Torah and blew the shofar. This shul is called the Ark, a modern orthodoxe shul where lots of our friends go. The sound of shofar is always very moving, all the Jews react to it with intense emotion. At the Ark, I sat on the women's side, at the second row. In front of me sat a woman, who turned back to me and said : "I am new here, I have been coming for a few months, I don't think we have met, my name is Dina", so I said " I am also new but do not come here very often, my name is Odile Ellison." Then she laughted and said : "Maybe we are family, because I was born an Ellinson".
Le lendemain matin, nous allâmes à notre deuxième synagogue où David lut la Torah et sonna du chofar. Cette shul s'appelle l'Arche, elle est Orthodoxe moderne et beaucoup de nos amis y vont. Le son du chofar est toujours très émouvant, tous les Juifs y réagissent avec beaucoup d'émotion. A l'ark, je m'assieds du côté des femmes, au deuxième rang. Juste devant moi, une dame se retourna et me dit : "Je suis nouvelle ici, je viens depuis quelques mois, je ne pense pas vous connaître. Je m'appelle Dina." Alors je répondis : "Je suis nouvelle aussi, je m'appelle Odile Ellison." Elle se mit à rire et dit : "Nous sommes peut-être cousines, je suis née Ellinson."
So I said "My husband Mark has a lot of family here, tonight we are having dinner at Yaacov and Varda Ellinson, do you know them?" "Of course she said, Yaacov is my uncle". I called Mark who came to the women side (service had not started yet), and introduced them...
Alors je lui répondit "Mon mari Mark a beaucoup de famille ici, ce soir nous dinons chez Yaacov et Varda Ellinson, les connaissez-vous? "Bien sûr, Yaacov est mon oncle." J'appelai Mark qui vint du côté des femmes, l'office n'ayant pas encore commencé, et je les présentai...
They went through the family tree, her mother was a sister of Yaacov Ellinson whom we recently met, and a cousin of Mark's grand-father.
Ils etracèrent l'ar re généalogique familial, sa mère était une sœur de Yaacov Ellinson que nous avons récemment rencontré et une cousine du grand-père de Mark.
Then we all had lunch at John and Dalia, new friends from our usual shul. Rabbi Bender was there too, he came specially from Israel to be at Kehilat Nitzan during the New Year and Kipur. He knows Rivon Krygier, our Rabbi in Paris, from their rabbinical studies long time ago in Jerusalem, but they keep in touch.
Puis nous allâmes déjeuner chez John et Dalia, de nouveaux amis de notre shul habituelle. Le Rabbin Bendal était là lui aussi, venu spécialement d'Israël pour être à Kehilat Nitzan pour le Nouvel An et Kipour. Il connaît Rivon Kryger, notre Rabbin à Paris, du temps de leurs études au séminaire à Jérusalem, il y a longtemps, mais ils sont toujours restés en contact.
We were invited for Thursday evening (the second night) at Mark's newly found Australian family : at Yaacov and Varda's home. Yaacov Ellinson is over ninety years old and Varda must be younger by a few years, they are amazing, warm, charming, very elegant, very happy to tell us all they know about Mark's family in Melbourne. Of course Yaacov and Varda knew Dina whom we had met at The Ark, we all found it so funny that I sat almost next to her by chance.
Le Jeudi soir nous étions invités à diner dans la famille australienne, nouvellement découverte de Mark : chez Yaacov et Varda Ellinson. Yaacov a plus de 90 ans et sa femme Varda doit avoir quelques années de moins, ils sont fantastiques, chaleureux, très élégants, ravis de nous dire tout ce qu'ils savent sur la famille à Melbourne. Bien sûr Yaacov et Varda connaissaient Dina rencontrée le matin à l'Ark, nous trouvâmes tous très drôle que je me sois assise près d'elle par hasard .
The young generation talked a lot with David an Myriam about their lives and their jobs or studies, our generation was interesting too, having met Mark's sister in Israel long time ago, and wanting to know all about us. (one son was divorced, the other one not married and the daughter divorced too).
La jeune génération parlait beaucoup avec David et Myriam de leurs vies, de leurs études ou de leur travail. Notre génération était intéressante aussi, ayant rencontré Jane, la sœur de Mark il y a longtemps en Israël. (L'un des fils est divorcé, le second non marié et la fille est divorcée, elle aussi.)
The meal was lavish and absolutely delicious. Varda must have worked so hard... cooking, baking for 15 people. We had a great evening and felt so happy to have so nice and warm and welcoming family here in Melbourne.
Le repas fut copieux et absolument délicieux. Varda avait du travailler dur... cuisinant, faisant des gâteaux pour 15 personnes. Nous passâmes une merveilleuse soirée et nous sentîmes ravis d'avoir une famille une famille chaleureuse et accueillante ici, à Melbourne.
