TASMANIA DAY ONE:/ TASMANIE 1er JOUR

We just spent 4 days in Tasmania. Tasmania is a big island south of Australia. It used to be part of the rest of the continent but is now separated. It takes one hour by plane from Melbourne to Hobart (the biggest town in the south of the island) and 12 hours by ferry boat to the North of Tasmania. As the island is very big, we decided to fly there to the south and to stay in this area and to sleep in Hobart. Our hotel was old and very charming.

Nous venons de passer 4 jours en Tasmanie. La Tasmanie est une grande île au Sud de l'Australie. Elle faisait partie du continent Australien mais en est maintenant séparée. Il faut 1 h en avion de Melbourne à Hobart (la plus grande ville de l'île au Sud) ou 12h en ferry de Melbourne jusqu'au Nord de la Tasmanie. Comme l'île est très grande, nous avons décidé d'aller en avion au Sud et d'y rester les 4 jours en dormant à Hobart. Notre hôtel un peu ancien avait beaucoup de charme.

Hobart is the main city, the most populous with a population of 225 000, and has the only airport of the  island (the whole Tasmania has a population of about 500 000 inhabitants). After checking in our hotel, we went to see the oldest synagogue in Australia and were greeted by one of it's members who opened it for us. It is still in use but with very few members attending. It is progressive and has 3 services : Conservative, Reform and Orthodoxe.

Hobart est la plus grande ville de Tasmanie, avec une population de 225 000 habitants. Elle possède le seul aéroport de l'île. La Tasmanie a une population de 500 000 âmes environ. Après avoir déposé nos valises à l'hôtel, nous allâmes visiter la plus ancienne synagogue d'Australie, qui est toujours en activité réduite. L'un des membres nous ouvrit et nous fit visiter. Cette synagogue est progressive et accueille des offices aussi bien Masorti, Libéraux et Orthodoxes.

After visiting the shul, we had a pic-nic lunch then took a bus to Mount Wellington (1200m) the highest mountain in Tasmania. (see next post)

Après avoir visité la shul, nous prîmes un pique-nique dans un parc, puis montâmes en bus pour nous rendre au Mont Wellington, la plus haute montagne de l'île 1200m d'altitude. (voir article suivant)

                                           

  

FIRST ROSH HASHANA IN MELBOURNE: 1er ROCH HACHANA A MALBOURNE

Mark and I spent our first Rosh Hashana in Melbourne. The first night was on Wednesday 20th septembre and we had guests at home. I had made a special Aussie decoration with apples of course (We, Jews use to eat apples dipped in honey so that the year to come, is sweet to us.) and koalas holding a small Australian flag. David and Myriam were there of course, and we had a couple from shul, Thu a charming young woman, and Harold a gentleman from shul who was alone on that night and happy to be invited. We sang songs for Jewish New Year, which we had found on Internet. 

 

 

Mark et moi avons passé notre premier Roch Hachana à Melbourne. Le premier soir était le Mercredi 20 Septembre et nous avions des invités à la maison. J'avais fait une décorations spéciale australienne, avec des pommes bien sûr (nous les Juifs, avons pour coutume de tremper une pomme dans du miel pour que l'année qui commence nous soit douce) et des koalas tenant le drapeau autralien. David et Myriam étaient là bien sûr, et nous avions des invités : un couple de la synagogue, Thu une jeune vietnamienne, et Harold un monsieur qui est souvent seul et qui était ravi d'être invité ce soir-là. Nous avons chanté des chansons de circonstance (Nouvel An juif) trouvées sur internet.

The next morning we went to our second shul (we have 2 in Mzlbourne) where David read the Torah and blew the shofar. This shul is called the Ark, a modern orthodoxe shul where lots of our friends go. The sound of shofar is always very moving, all the Jews react to it with intense emotion. At the Ark, I sat on the women's side, at the second row. In front of me sat a woman, who turned back to me and said : "I am new here, I have been coming for a few months, I don't think we have met, my name is Dina", so I said " I am also new but do not come here very often, my name is Odile Ellison." Then she laughted and said : "Maybe we are family, because I was born an Ellinson".

Le lendemain matin, nous allâmes à notre deuxième synagogue où David lut la Torah et sonna du chofar. Cette shul s'appelle l'Arche, elle est Orthodoxe moderne et beaucoup de nos amis y vont. Le son du chofar est toujours très émouvant, tous les Juifs y réagissent avec beaucoup d'émotion. A l'ark, je m'assieds du côté des femmes, au deuxième rang. Juste devant moi, une dame se retourna et me dit : "Je suis nouvelle  ici, je viens depuis quelques mois, je ne pense pas vous connaître. Je m'appelle Dina." Alors je répondis : "Je suis nouvelle aussi, je m'appelle Odile Ellison." Elle se mit à rire et dit : "Nous sommes peut-être cousines, je suis née Ellinson."

So I said "My husband Mark has a lot of family here, tonight we are having dinner at Yaacov and Varda Ellinson, do you know them?" "Of course she said, Yaacov is my uncle". I called Mark who came to the women side (service had not started yet), and introduced them... 

Alors je lui répondit "Mon mari Mark a beaucoup de famille ici, ce soir  nous dinons chez Yaacov et Varda Ellinson, les connaissez-vous? "Bien sûr, Yaacov est mon oncle."  J'appelai Mark qui vint du côté des femmes, l'office n'ayant pas encore commencé, et je les présentai...

They went through the family tree, her mother was a sister of Yaacov Ellinson whom we recently met, and a cousin of Mark's grand-father. 

Ils etracèrent l'ar re généalogique familial, sa mère était une sœur de Yaacov Ellinson que nous avons récemment rencontré et une cousine du grand-père de Mark.

Then we all had lunch at John and Dalia, new friends from our usual shul. Rabbi Bender was there too, he came specially from Israel to be at Kehilat Nitzan during the New Year and Kipur. He knows Rivon Krygier, our Rabbi in Paris, from their rabbinical studies long time ago in Jerusalem, but they keep in touch.

Puis nous allâmes déjeuner chez John et Dalia, de nouveaux amis de notre shul habituelle. Le Rabbin Bendal était là lui aussi, venu  spécialement d'Israël pour être à Kehilat Nitzan pour le Nouvel An et Kipour. Il connaît Rivon Kryger, notre Rabbin à Paris, du temps de leurs études au séminaire à Jérusalem, il y a longtemps, mais ils sont toujours restés en contact.

We were invited for Thursday evening (the second night) at Mark's newly found Australian family : at Yaacov and Varda's home. Yaacov Ellinson is over ninety years old and Varda must be younger by a few years, they are amazing, warm, charming, very elegant, very happy to tell us all they know about Mark's family in Melbourne. Of course Yaacov and Varda knew Dina whom we had met at The Ark, we all found it so funny that I sat almost next to her by chance.

Le Jeudi soir nous étions invités à diner dans la famille australienne, nouvellement découverte de Mark : chez Yaacov et Varda Ellinson. Yaacov a plus de 90 ans et sa femme Varda doit avoir quelques années de moins, ils sont fantastiques, chaleureux, très élégants, ravis de nous dire tout ce qu'ils savent sur la famille à Melbourne. Bien sûr Yaacov et Varda connaissaient Dina rencontrée le matin à l'Ark, nous trouvâmes tous très drôle que je me sois assise près d'elle par hasard .

The young generation talked a lot with David an Myriam about their lives and their jobs or studies, our generation was interesting too, having met Mark's sister in Israel long time ago, and wanting to know all about us. (one son was divorced, the other one not married and the daughter divorced too).

La jeune génération parlait beaucoup avec David et Myriam de leurs vies, de leurs études ou de leur travail. Notre génération était intéressante aussi, ayant rencontré Jane, la sœur de Mark il y a longtemps en Israël. (L'un des fils est divorcé, le second non marié et la fille est divorcée, elle aussi.) 

The meal was lavish and absolutely delicious. Varda must have worked so hard... cooking, baking for 15 people. We had a great evening and felt so happy to have so nice and warm and welcoming  family here in Melbourne.

Le repas fut copieux et absolument délicieux. Varda avait du travailler dur... cuisinant, faisant des gâteaux pour 15 personnes. Nous passâmes une merveilleuse soirée et nous sentîmes ravis d'avoir une famille une famille chaleureuse et accueillante ici, à Melbourne.

MELBOURNE 17/09/2017

Gosh, how time flies... already a week since my last blog! Last Tuesday, we saw a ballet called "Benne Long", name of an aborigine man who was kidnapped by the English to serve as a translater between his clan and them. He was also sent to England for a few years and became fluent in the language but felt very lost as he did not belong anymore to his people, neither did he ever belong to the "colonialists invaders" society.

Mon Dieu, comme le temps passe... ça fit déjà une semaine que je n'ai rien écrit sur mon blog! Mardi dernier, nous sommes allés voir un ballet intitulé "Benne Long", nom d'un aborigène australien kidnappé par les Anglais pour leur servir d'interprète entre son clan et eux. Il fut aussi envoyé plusieurs années en Angleterre et devint très bon en Anglais mais se sentit perdu, n'appartenant plus complètement à son peuple, et pas non plus intégré dans la société des "envahisseurs colonialistes".

The dancers (most of them aborigine metis) were good, but we found the choreography repetitive and boring. Not a very convincing experience, I am afraid...

Les danseurs ( pour la plupart des métis aborigènes) étaient bons, mais nous trouvâmes la chorégraphie répétitive et ennuyeuse... Un expérience peu concluante, je le crains... 

On Wedesday, we saw a film about Ohad Naharin, the Israeli choreographer of the famous Batsheva Dance Company. Fascinating! A great dancer and a great choreographer... even if I don't like his choreography so much. Mark loves them ... but they show too much the neurotic aspect of Israeli life for my taste. I want ballets to make me dream, to charm me, not to show me the ugliness or violence of XXIst century's world. Anyway, even if I don't enjoy his productions, the guy has got a lot of talent... not to my taste... but he is amazing!

Mercredi nous sommes allés voir un film sur Ohad Naharim, le choreographe du fameux ballet Israélien : Bathsheva Dance Company. Fascinant! Un grand danseur et un grand chorégraphe... même si je n'aime pas tellement ses chorégraphies. Mark les adore... mais elles montrent trop l'aspect névrotique de la vie Israélienne, pour mon goût. Je veux que les ballets me fassent rêver, qu'ils  me charment, pas qu'ils me montrent la laideur et la violence du monde au XXIème siècle. Quoiqu'il en soit, même si je n'aime pas ses productions, le gars a beaucoup de talent... pas à mon goût, mais il est remarquable!

It's like Brahms... Mark loves Brahms and we often go to hear his piano symphonies... but even if I try hard, I find some parts absolutely magnificent but the rest bores me to death and makes me sleepy. Never mind, Mark is worth my going with him to hear Brahms symphonies for the hundredth time...

C'est comme Brahms... Mark adore Brahms et nous allons souvent entendre ses symphonies pour piano et orchestre...mais même si je fais de mon mieux, je trouve certaines parties magnifiques, mais le reste m'ennuie à périr et me fait dormir. Tant pis, Mark vaut bien que je l'accompagne entendre les symphonies de Brahms pour la centième fois...

On Thursday we went to a very elegant concert Chamber quatuor, with only 65 people in the audience and he possibility after the concert to discuss with the artists while drinking Australian "champagne like wine". Amazing very talented Aussie artists, very good music!

Jeudi nous sommes allés à un concert très sélect, d'un quatuor de musique de Chambre, avec seulement 65 personnes dans le public et la possibilité après le concert de discuter avec les musiciens autour d'une coupe de "champagne australien". Excellents musiciens baroques australiens, excellente musique. 

An old friend from Paris (our parents were friends and I have always known her) sent an email saying her son had just arrived in Melbourne with his fiancée and giving me his email. I immediately invited them for lunch and they came today, on a glorious sunny day. So beautiful weather that we had lunch in the garden. They are very charming and David and us were delighted to meet the girlfriend and to see Quentin after so many years, I hope we will see them again soon.(Myriam was working with other student on a common project, I hope she is there next time too).

Une vieille amie de Paris, (nos parents étaient amis et je l'ai toujours connue) m'a envoyé un e-mail disant que son fils venait d'arriver à Melbourne avec sa fiancée, et me donnant le mail du garçon. Je les ai immédiatement invités et ils sont venus déjeuner ce midi, par une journée tellement superbe que nous avons pu déjeuner dans le jardin. Ils sont tout à fait charmants et David et nous étions ravis de retrouver Quentin après tant d'années, et espérons les revoir bientôt. Myriam avait un travail de groupe pour la fac et n'était pas là, j'espère qu'elle sera présente pour les rencontrer une autre fois.

Jewish New Year is very soon and we will have guests on the first night Wednesday 20th September. We are invited on the second night. I wish everybody a very Happy Jewish New Year!!!

MELBOURNE 8/09/2017

Last Monday, I attended a meeting about an Australian aboriginal called William Cooper who, after the Kristallnacht (9-10 November 1938)  brought a letter of protest to the then German Reich Consulate in Melbourne on the 6 December 1938. The consul of course, refused to see him but Cooper left his letter and ever since that time got no answer. However, last Monday, the German Consul attended the meeting, officially answered the letter and gave his letter to Mr Boydie, the grand-son of William Cooper.

Lundi dernier, j'ai assisté à une réunion sur un Aborigène Australien nommé William Cooper, qui, à la suite de la Nuit de cristal (9-10 Novembre 1938) apporta une lettre officielle de protestation au Consulat du Reich Allemand de Melbourne le 6 Décembre 1938. Le consul, bien sûr refusa de le recevoir mais Cooper laissa sa lettre sans jamais recevoir de réponse. Cependant Lundi dernier, le Consul d'Allemagne actuel assista à la réunion et donna une réponse officielleen remettant une lettre à Mr Boydie, un des petit-fils de William Cooper.

Aubrey Schwarz, Juif, passionné par cette histoire, qui a emmené Mr Boyde en Israël et a organisé la conférence.

Aubrey Schwarz, a Jew who is fascinated by this story and who brought Mr Boyde to Israel.

William Cooper was to my knowledge, the only person on earth to protest officially about the Kristallnight and the shameful way the Germans were treating the Jews. There were a few individual protests in newspapers, but no official ones to the German officials. Only one aboriginal tribe protested...

A ma connaissance, William Cooper est la seule personne sur terre à avoir officiellement protesté au sujet de la Nuit de Cristal et de la façon honteuse dont les Allemands traitaient les Juifs. Il y eut de rares protestations individuelles dans la presse, mais aucune protestation officielle auprès des autorités allemandes de l'époque. Seule une ethnie aborigène australienne protesta....

It was a very moving ceremony.

Yesterday, Mark and I went to an amazing restaurant to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. The restaurant is called Attica, in Rippon Lea. Attica is one of the best and most famous restaurants in Melbourne and possibly in the world, the equivalent of a 3 stars in the Michelin Guide. It only serves Australian food and products... and the meal lasted 4 hours....every dish was amazing and delicious and most surprising...

Hier Mark et moi sommes allés dans un restaurant incroyable pour célébrer nos 35 ans de mariage. Le restaurant s'appelle Attica, à Rippon Lea. Attica est un des meilleurs et plus célèbres restaurants de Melbourne et peut-être même du monde, l'équivalent d'un 3 étoiles au Guide Michelin. Il ne sert que des plats et des produits australiens....le repas dura 4 heures... chaque plat était incroyable, délicieux et surprenant.

            

                                                    

The first dish was leaves from Australian bushes, that you dipped in a dip made of yoghurt and spices. No knives and fork, everything was eaten by hand. Then we had a melon with something that looked like fish eggs but was a very special "finger lime".

Le premier plat était des feuilles de buissons australiens que l'on trempait dans un dip de yaourt avec des épices. Tout se mangeait à la main, sans couverts...Puis nous eûmes un melon saupoudré de quelque chose qui ressemblait à des œufs de poisson mais était en fait un "citron vert doigt".
