MELBOURNE : THE JOHNSTON COLLECTION/ LA COLLECTION JOHNSTON A MELBOURNE

Few weeks ago, Mark and I visited the Johnston Collection in central Melbourne. William Johnston was an antic dealer, who travelled the world to find beautiful artefacts to sell or to keep when they were unique. He bequeathed his collection to the people of Victoria  in 1986 on condition it was administrated as independant non-profit, for cultural value museum. (www.johnstoncollection.org)

Il y a quelques semaines, Mark et moi avons visité la Collection Johnston dans le centre de Melbourne. William Johnston était un antiquaire, qui voyagea partout dans le monde pour trouver de beaux objets à vendre, ou a garder s'ils étaient spéciaux.  Il légua sa collection aux gens de Victoria en 1986 à condition qu'elle soit administrée en tant que Musée culturel indépendant sans but commercial. The collection is located in an elegant neighbourhood of Melbourne and is not allowed to let the visitor park or walk in the area. So the visits are organized well in advance and visitors meet in a hotel lobby, then take a minibus for 2 to 3 minutes to get to the Collection. This complicated process must be the reason why this beautiful collection is not so famous in Melbourne.

 

La collection est située dans un quartier élégant de Melbourne et n'est pas autorisée à laisser les visiteurs se garer ni marcher pour s'y rendre. Les visites sont donc organisées à l'avance et les visiteurs ont rendez-vous dans le hall d'un hotel voisin, puis emmenés 2 ou 3 minutes en minibus jusqu'à la collection. Cette méthode compliquée explique sans doute pourquoi cette belle collection n'est pas très connue à Melbourne.

 

                                                    

The curators try to change often the artefacts in display and systematically add some modern art by living artists.

                                       

Les administrateurs s'efforcent de varier les objets présentés et y adjoignent systématiquement des oeuvres récentes d'artistes contemporains.
