Walk with Chun Wing's parents/ Promenade avec les parents de Chun Wing

Yesterday afternoon King and Ping came to our flat and they brought me a Hong-Kong brand new broom. I was so happy! I hope one day to have an exhibition of Asian brooms and of all the photos I took of brooms all over South East Asia and China.

Hier apres-midi King et Ping sont venus a notre appartement et ils m'ont apporte un balai de Hong-Kong tout neuf. J'etais aux anges! J'espere un jour faire une exposition de balais Asiatiques en bambou ou palmier et montrer toutes les photos de balais que j'ai prises en l'Asie du Sud Est et en Chine.

We walked Kai-Phong together in the hills during one hour, then had tea, fruit and chocolate cake. We spent a lovely afternoon all together. I don't know when we will see them again, maybe in June on our way to France.

                                                   

The 2 K (King and Kai Phong get along very well) /  Les deux K (King et Kai Phong s'entendent tres bien.

Nous avons promene Kai-Phong ensemble dans les collines pendant une heure, puis nous avons pris le the avec des fruits et du gateau au chocolat. Nous avons passe un tres bon apres-midi tous ensemble. J'ignore quand nous nous reverrons, peut-etre en Juin, en chemin pour la France.

                                                              

Ping and Kai Phong are good friends too. / King et Kai Phong sont bons amis eux aussi.

Today we had another meeting with the removal company and I have a very bad new... They think I should not bring my brooms with me as the Australian Authorities are so strict and scarred of germs, seeds, dust and mud... even if my brooms are brand new and never used, Santa Fe is strongly against trying to take them with our stuff....

                                               

Aujourd'hui, nous avons vu a nouveau nos demenageurs et j'ai eu une tres mauvaise nouvelle... Ils pensent que je ne dois pas apporter mes balais Asiatiques en Australie car les autorites Australiennes sont tres strictes et redoutent les microbes, les poussieres, les graines et la boue... et meme si mes balais sont tout neufs et jamais utilises, Santa Fe est violemment oppose a ce que nous les apportions dans nos affaires...

MOVING OUT IN 16 DAYS/ DEMENAGEMENT DANS 16 JOURS

Things are moving fast. This week-end is very quiet, we will see Chun-Wing's parents tomorrow afternoon for the last time while we live in Hong-Kong. Then next Sunday 5 March, we have a big "Sayonara Party" a long brunch at home from 11am to 6pm. 

Ca bouge vite maintenant. Ce week-end est tres calme, nous verrons les parents de Chun-Wing demain apres-midi pour la derniere fois tandis que nous residons a Hong-Kong. Puis Dimanche prochain, 5 Mars, grand Brunch d'adieux de 11h a 18h.

On 9 March, Kai-Phong will have her last Vet check-up before flying to Melbourne. On the 9 and 10 March, the removal company will wrap then pick up our furniture and leave us camping on our mattress with 1 small table and 4 chairs... We will spend our 3 last days in an empty flat which is going to be fun!!!

Le 9 Mars, Kai Phong a son dernier check-up veterinaire, avant de s'envoler pour Melbourne. Les 9 et 10 Mars, les demenageurs viendront emballer et enlever nos meubles, nous laissant camper sur notre matelas avec 1 table et 4 chaises... Nous allons donc passer les 3 derniers jours dans un appartement vide ca va etre drole!!!

On 13 March early in the morning we say goodbye to Mardee and we leave for Melbourne. Kai Phong will fly in the evening and on arrival the following morning, will be taken straight from the airport to quarantine (50 Kms outside Melbourne) where she will stay for 10 days. Then on 24 March,  as we don't have a car to fetch her, a special transporter will bring her to our home.

Le 13 Mars, tot le matin nous disons aurevoir a Mardee et nous partons pour Melbourne. Kai Phong s'envolera le soir et a l'arrivee le lendemain matin, sera emmenee directement de l'aeroport en quarantaine (a 50 Km de Melbourne) ou elle devra rester pendant 10 jours. Puis le 24 Mars, comme nous n'avons pas de voiture pour aller la chercher, un transporter special pour chiens nous l'amenera a la maison.

Who knows if things will or won't go according to plan....

Ca c'est le plan, nous verrons bien si tout se passe comme prevu...

BACK IN HONG-KONG/ DE RETOUR A HONG-KONG

We came back yesterday and Hong-Kong weather has not changed since we went to Australia. Today is very windy (the winter monsoon) and foggy (smog). It was nice being back in our HK flat so charming and to be greeted by enthusiastic Kai-Phong so happy to see us after 2 weeks separation. I missed her too.

Nous sommes rentres hier et le temps de Hong-Kong n'a pas change depuis notre voyage en Australie. Aujourd'hui il y a beaucoup de vent (la Mousson d'hiver) et de brouillard (pollution incluse). C'etait agreable d'etre de retour dans notre charmant appartement Hong-Kongais et d'etre accueillis par une Kai-Phong enthousiaste, si heureuse de nous revoir apres 2 semaines de separation. Elle m'a manque elle aussi.

Melbourne has a strange weather, it can be very cold and suddenly the sun is here and it becomes rather hot, then it rains for 2 minutes or 2 hours... then sunshine again, then windy and cold, all in one day. Therefore, if you want to be prepared, you need a big handbag with "layers" as they call it : a pull over and a light vest that you can wear or remove easily....and of course a folding umbrella.

Melbourne a une meteo bizarre, il peut faire assez froid et soudain le soleil se leve et il fait tres chaud, puis il pleut pendant 2 minutes a 2 heures... puis soleil a nouveau, puis vent glace, tout ca en un seul jour. Donc pour parer a toute eventualite, il faut mettre des "couches superposees" comme ils disent : un pull over, une veste legere qu'on peut mettre ou enlever facilement.. et bien sur un parapluie pliant.

Mark had professional meetings meanwhile Myriam and I visited flats till we decided to also visit houses. The first house was superb but a train ran just behind it's garden and it had many small rooms rather dark. We applied anyway (the tenant apply and the owner chooses). 

Mark avait des rendez-vous professionnels et Myriam et moi pendant ce temps visitions des appartements jusqu'a ce que nous decidions de visiter des maisons. La premiere etait superbe. mais avec un train qui passait juste a l'arriere du jardin et beaucoup de petites pieces pas tres claires. Nous posames quand meme notre candidature (les locataires postulent et l'agence transmet au proprietaire qui choisit).

Later on we found a house I fell in love with, old quaint (like us) we all liked it. We applied and were accepted. I was so relieved to have somewhere to live next time we come back. Myriam and I started buying some  furniture because our furniture from Hong-Kong will take 6 weeks in a container by boat....

                                         

Par la suite nous trouvames une maison dont je tombais amoureuse, vieillotte (comme nous) nous la trouvions tous jolie. J'etais tres soulagee d'avoir un endroit ou vivre lors de notre prochain retour a Melbourne. Myriam et moi commencames a acheter des meubles car notre demenagement de Hong-Kong prendra 6 semaines a arriver par bateau.

This move is slightly complicated as Pessah (Jewish Passover) arrives soon and we have to change all our plates, knives and forks, pans etc... the set for meat as well as the set for dairy products,  just for a week. Our furniture and plates from HK will arrive after Pessah... Myriam and I decided to buy some stuff for our arrival before Pessah, and this year for once, to use plastic plates and knives and forks just during Pessah week. As we have in HK et Paris all we need for Pessah it would be stupid to buy more.

Ce demenagement est un peu complique par le fait que Pessah arrive bientot et que nous devons changer toute notre vaisselle Lait et Viande juste pour une semaine. Or nos meubles et vaisselles de Hong-Kong arriveront apres Pessah... Myriam et moi avons decide que cette annee pour une fois, a Pessah, nous utiliserons de la vaisselle en plastique a titre exceptionnel! D'autant que nous en avons plein a Hong-Kong et Paris et qu'il serait stupide d'en acheter davantage.

I am currently trying to solve a difficult problem : how do you place your furniture in a totaly different environment? We move from a small Hong-Kong flat to which I tried to give a slightly European-Chinese touch... to a very Australian-British big house??? What will go where, what shall we bring and what shall we leave behind??? I wake up and night and start reviewing the furniture and imagining it in our future home....

J'essaye actuellement de resoudre un probleme difficile, comment placer ses meubles dans un environnement totalement different? Nous quittons un appartement Hong-Kongais de petite taille, auquel j'avais essaye de donner une touche Europeo-Chinoise... pour aller dans une grande maison tres Australo-British??? Que devons nous emporter et que laisser derriere nous??? Je me reveille la nuit en revoyant les meubles et en les imaginant dans notre nouvelle maison...

To my delight, in our new home, I will have a studio in the garden for painting. I can't wait!!! Mark will have his study on the first floor when he works from home, Kai Phong will have a small but very nice garden in front and behind the house. Myriam who finds her studio in the CBD (Center of Melbourne) too small, will join us when her 1 year lease will end up (end of June), she plans to live with us for 6 months till she finishes her Master degree (end of 2017). Then, she will move again once she has finished her Master degree and found a job.

A ma grande joie j'ai un studio pour peindre dans le jardin. J'ai hate de my installer!!! Mark aura son bureau au premier etage s'il travaille de la maison, Kai Phong aura un petit mais ravissant jardin devant et derriere la maison. Myriam qui trouve son studio au CBD (Centre ville) un peu exigu, nous rejoindra fin Juin (une fois son bail d'un an termine) et restera avec nous 6 mois (jusqu'a ce qu'elle finisse sa maitrise), puis re-demenagera lorsqu'elle aura trouve un job.

David should finish his PhD end of 2017 and plans to postulate for several PostDoc in various places in the world....but he will have a spare bedroom in our home too in case of need. 

David lui, finira son doctorat si tout va bien a la fin 2017 et ira ensuite faire des Postdocs un peu partout dans le monde...mais il aura aussi une chambre chez nous en cas de besoin.

We saw a funny clock that rings and makes music during 10 mn every hours... Nous avons vu une drole d'horloge qui sonne et fait de la musique durant 10 minutes toutes les heures.

AUSTRALIA/AUSTRALIE

Mark and I are in Melbourne looking for somewhere to live in... At the beginning I was looking for a flat, but here in Melbourne, they are so modern and in the center with views over modern buildings, highways and  I could not imagine myself living in there....I like our home to have something special, some charm to it....

Mark et mois sommes a Melbourne nous cherchons un endroit pour vivre... Au debut je cherchais un appartement, mais ici a Melbourne, ils sont si modernes et au centre avec des vues sur des buildings, des autoroutes, et je n'arrive pas a m'imaginer vivant la-dedans... J'aime que notre maison ait quelque chose de special, du charme...

So we opted for a house and after several visits, this seems to be the best choice. We have already applied for 2 houses very different in style but spacious (I missed space so much in our HK home) and those 2 houses have a "little something" that you can call a soul...

Nous avons donc opte pour une maison et apres plusieurs visites, c'est un bon choix. Nous avons deja pose notre candidature pour deux d'entre elles, de style tres different mais spacieuses et avec ce petit quelque chose qu'on peut appeler une ame...

Myriam is a great help and we rely much on her. Thanks God the students summer holidays last almost 4 months here.

Myriam nous aide beaucoup et nous nous appuyons beaucoup sur elle. Heureusement que les vacances universitaires d'ete, durent presque 4 mois ici.

Real Estate here is a nightmare if you rent. If you buy they are charming, but if you rent you are among a mass of people looking for a home and you have very little help. One agent even gave us a key and told us, "Look by yourself, its 32nd floor flat number 112, and come back once you have seen it". I was in shock!

L'immobilier est un cauchemar ici si vous louez. Si vous etes acheteurs, ils sont charmants, mais si vous louez vous etes parmi une masse de gens qui cherchent a se loger et on vous aide tres peu. Un agent  nous a meme donne une cle en disant "Allez-y tout seuls, c'est au 32e etage appartement 112, et revenez quand vous l'aurez vu." J'etais vraiment choquee!

For a house an agent was organizing "an open day" from 12.15 to 12.30!!!!! so we went, there were several young couples visiting with us. Some 

vanished very quickly uninterested, others asked questions, we left early too...

Pour l'une des maisons l'agent immobilier organisait une visite de 12h15 a 12h30!!! alors nous y allames, il y avait plusieurs jeunes menages qui visitaient aussi avec nous. Certains disparurent tres vite, pas interesses, d'autres  posaient des questions, nous partimes vite aussi...

I fell in love with one house, slightly too far from trains and trams but sooooo charming, fate will decide if we get it or not...if the owner wants us Mark, Kai Phong and me...

Je suis tombee amoureuse d'une maison un peu trop loin des trams et trains mais tellement charmante, le sort decidera si nous l'aurons ou non, si le proprietaire nous veut Mark, Kai Phong et moi....

Tomorrow, we leave home at 7.15 am for 2 weeks in Melbourne. A taxi driver, friend of Mardee (our helper), will take us to Central we'll find the train to the  airport,  called airport-express.

Demain, nous quittons la maison a 7h15 du matin pour 2 semaines a Melbourne. Un taxi ami de Mardee (notre helpeuse) nous emmenera a Central ou se trouve le train pour l'aeroport, appele Airport-Express. 

It only takes 20 minutes on the train but before boarding the train, you can register all your luggages if you fly one of the main air companies, so you arrive empty handed at the airport which is very pleasant.

Ca prend seulement 20 mn en train et on peut enregistrer toutes les bagages (si l'on voyage avec une des principales compagnies aeriennes) avant de prendre le train, donc on arrive les mains libres a l'aeroport ce qui est bien agreable.

The flight takes 9 hours to 9 hours 30 minutes, and in February, summer for Australia - spring for Hong-Kong, Melbourne is 3 hours ahead of Hong-Kong and 10 hours ahead of Paris, so we land at 11.40 pm. 

Le vol prend 9h a 9h30 et en Fevrier, c'est l'ete a Melbourne et le debut du printemps a Hong-Kong, et Melbourne a 3 h d'avance sur Hong-Kong et 10h sur Paris, donc nous atterrirons a 11h40 du soir.

Myriam told me the weather was changing quickly, it rains then it is very hot and sunny, then cloudy and cool, then very hot again...so you always need an umbrella and a light sweater.

Myriam m'a dit que le temps est tres changeant, il pleut, puis il fait tres chaud, puis nuageux et frais, puis tres chand encore... il faut donc toujours emporter un parapluie et un chandail leger.

In Australia, they are far from everywhere and they  fear contamination from other continents, so you cannot  bring any food, any plants, no more than 2 bottles of alcohol per person, as they are fussy about all forms of contamination. The removal company already warned us they would not ship my painting oil tubes because they might get a fine... 

En Australie, ils sont loin de tout et ils redoutent la contamination des autres continents, aussi est-il interdit d'apporter de la nourriture, des plantes, pas plus de 2 bouteilles d'alcool par personne, et ils sont tres sourcilleux sur toute forme de contamination. L'entreprise de demenagement nous a deja avertis qu'ils ne transporteraient pas mes tubes de peinture a l'huile car ils risqueraient une amende.

I am very sad because I bought some oil painting tubes in England, in France and long time ago a handful of very good and very small and ultra expansive ones in Veronese in Italy. Most of those tubes are half empty but I cherish them, they are my "working tools", so are my brushes....

Je suis tres triste car j'ai achete des tubes de peinture en Angleterre, en France et il y a longtemps en Italie a Verone, quelques excellents, tres petits et tres onereux tubes de peinture a l'huile. La pluspart sont a moitie vides mais je les adore, ce sont mes "outils de travail", de meme que mes pinceaux...

I have no idea of the quality of the painting tubes I will find in Australia... In Hong-Kong and China, the quality is appalling, they call it "Oil tubes" but it is very messy and full of acrylic. It dries quickly on the pallet, and cannot be used again and again just adding some linseed oil. So I bought all my tubes in Europe.

Je n'ai pas la moindre idee de la qualite de peinture que je vais trouver en Australie... A Hong-Kong et en Chine la qualite est epouvantable, ils appellent ca "de la peinture a l'huile"  mais c'est tres sale et plein d'acrylique. Ca seche tres vite sur la palette et on ne peut l'utiliser encore et encore en rajoutant un peu d'huile de lin.

Here people ask me what I will regret from Hong-Kong. Well, I will regret the dichotomy between very modern Hong-Kong immaculate and modern, and middle-age old Hong-Kong which is still very Chinese, dirty, noisy and so charming...

Ici les gens me demandent ce que je regretterai de Hong-Kong. Eh bien je regretterai la dichotomie entre le Hong-Kong immacule et tres moderne, et le vieux Hong-Kong moyen-ageux, reste tres Chinois, sale, bruyant et si charmant... 

I will regret my Helper whom I loved dearly almost like a friend, I will regret the cheap taxis, the vegetarian dim-sum, the bamboo brooms and the bamboo scafoldings, the people doing Tai-chi on the side of the roads or in the parks, the wild-boars more numerous every day just outside our flat, the Star Ferry to TST, the Indian vegetarian around East TST.

Je regretterai ma Helpeuse que j'adore et qui est comme une amie, je regretterai les taxis bon marche, les dim-sum vegetariens, les balais en bambou, et les echaffaudages en bambou, les gens qui font du Tai-Chi dans la rue ou dans les parcs, les sangliers de plus en plus nombreux pres de chez nous, le Star Ferry pour TST, et les restaurants Indiens Vegetariens autour de East TST. 

I will regret the Cantonese Opera and The Hong-Kong Chinese Orchestra. I will regret the Siu-Ba (minibus) where you have to shout that you want to get down so that the bus driver will stop for you. I will regret the Chinese festivals, the cotton tree flowers, the Bauhenia trees' flowers,and the kites flying high in the sky and the noisy Kakatoo with their beautiful white feathers, grey and yellow on the head and their horrible screams, and most of all : I'll regret all the Chinese lanterns!

Je regretterai l'Opera Cantonais et l'Orchestre Chinois de Hong-Kong. Je regretterai les Minibus ou l'on doit hurler au chauffeur qu'on veut descendre a la prochaine pour qu'il s'arrete et vous laisse descendre. Je regretterai les Festivals Chinois, les fleurs des Bauhenias, et les fleurs de Cotonniers, et les milans qui volent haut dans le ciel et les Cacatoes avec leurs belles plumes blanches, mais grises et jaunes sur la tete et leurs cris horribles, mais plus que tout : Je regretterai toutes les lanternes chinoises!
